Capoeira is fun to watch. In a demonstration setting, it's beautiful.
Have you ever wondered how those gymnastics might be applied in a combative situation? Check out this video. It shows students in a capoeira class sparring and putting all that athleticism to use.
It IS beautiful to watch but it seems to be extremely restrictive. The only attacks I saw (only watched half the video) were swinging kicks, sweeps, and shoves (and one accidental headbutt). No punches, elbows, knees, and no variation in their types of kicks used either.
ReplyDeleteThen again, maybe they are still trying to figure out how to bridge their styles gap from kihon to kumite. If that is the case then I'll look forward to another example in a few years time.

I've seen a few videos on YouTube of "Capoeira vs ..." and the examples of the guys shown look pretty capable.
ReplyDeleteCapoeira is great, it is not just martial art, it is culture per se, and great Brazilian culture too!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see some matches between Capoeira and Korean Tae Kyon.
ReplyDeleteSport commentator: now this is the last round, with the guys still dancing...no, still fighting...everybody is frustrated. (BUM)...very nice round house kick and the Korean guy fell down...but wait, the Brazilian complained, that was not a dance kick therefore is not legit...and the winner is....the Brazilian guy...(sigh)
ReplyDelete:-) As far as the music would go, I wonder what a Brazilian/Korean mash up would sound like?
