September 11 (1683)

September 11, 1683.

The seemingly unstoppable advance of militant Islam was brought to a halt and the tide turned at the Siege of Vienna in 1683.

Led by the last heavy cavalry in Europe, the Husaria, the Winged Horsemen of Poland, King Jan Sobieski III Poland routed the entrenched Muslim forces and the retreat of Islam from Central Europe had begun.

  1. Just curious, what is the post's correlation with the 9/11 tribute light picture?

  3. With Fire and Sword (Polish: Ogniem i mieczem) by Henryk Sienkiewicz is a great fictional account of the Husaria and Jan Sobieski. One of my favorite books.

  5. Magnificent, Rick, all way around--the 9/11 Tribute & the Husaria saga.
While not of Polish descent myself, I cherish the Polish love of liberty and honor. By the way, I commend these outstanding Polish films: "Krzyzacy," "Kanal," "Dlug," & "Katyn."
